Chapter Nine

Ford was definitely interested in her laying down drum tracks for a few samples he already had, and he asked her if she knew anyone for vocals, so she called Zara. Once Zara was confirmed and was being brought over, he mentioned he could use a bass player, so she called Karo. After that, he wanted a guitarist, so she called Minnie.

“You could have just said you wanted a band, Ford. I could have done a conference call.”

Ford laughed. “This is just a whim because an acquaintance wants to kick the new version of their video game in the ass, so I thought putting some of your betas to work might help enrich the sound a bit.”

“Oh, so this is a paying gig. Do you have a braille version of the music for Zara?”

“Wait. Are you serious?”

“Oh, yeah.”

“Shit. I will see what I can do.”

She ended the call and smirked. “That ought to keep him scrambling for a bit.”

“Does your friend really read braille?”

“Yeah, she studied like hell to get a grip on that skill.”

He drove them back toward Omega Lane. “She wasn’t always blind?”

“No. She has an affinity for demon alphas, and the ones she met wanted to do things the old-fashioned way. Blinding her, branding her, and they were going to hobble her as well, but they were interrupted, and she was able to get away.”

“They blind their mates?”

“Yup. It slows their ability to get away, as does the hobbling. The brand makes sure they are returned if another demon alpha sees them. Well, if they are marked. They did things in the wrong order, so she was able to do something they weren’t expecting.”

“What did she do?”

“She got away.” Luna knew her smile was smug. “She dislocated her thumbs, got out of the cuffs, and ran, blinded and bleeding with her clothing torn, looking for help. She got to a police station, and they got her medical help. Weirdly, an investigation showed no evidence of foul play. They chalked it up to lifestyle issues.”

He asked, “What?”

“The brand. Either they knew what it was and didn’t want to interfere, or they had no clue and thought she just had fetishes. It was just easier to pretend that she had been asking for it.”

He growled.

“Yeah. But, one of the officers wasn’t an asshole, and he called me. I went to visit Zara in the hospital, and I talked to her. She was freaking out, so I arranged for a therapist and an occupational therapist to help her adjust. Other members of the book club took her in, and when she was up for it, we got some volunteers involved. Right now, she is with Emma Nickelson. Her grandson is an alpha, but he doesn’t know or care what she does with her time, so she helps us with folks who need shelter when there isn’t any official channel available. She says it keeps her young.”

“Zara can really read braille?”

“Of course, but she can also read laser-printed pages. I just wanted to make Ford sweat for a while.
